One of our readers, who's getting ready for their private pilots license exam, just wrote in with a few "disambiguation" questions. Can anyone help him out? Please respond by commenting on this post.
Hi,
I am preparing for my PPl exam, and came across some terms that I don't understand, or the difference between:
1. "Orbit" and "Go around"
2. Line up and wait behind
3. Continue approach
4. Call area outbound
5. Who has right of way – an aircraft about to backtrack the runway, or an aircraft on final approach to landMany thanks

1. "Orbit" and "Go
1. "Orbit" and "Go around"
Orbit = circle around a point.
Go Around = abort landing, enter pattern for another attempt or follow tower instructions.
2. Line up and wait behind
Sound the same to me: "Get in line behind [that aircraft]."
3. Continue approach
How is this confusing? Continue your approach to land and expect further instructions later. If IFR, continue as published.
4. Call area outbound
Sometimes used by Class D towers to alert them when you're exiting their airspace.
5. Who has right of way – an aircraft about to backtrack the runway, or an aircraft on final approach to land
This depends. If "about to backtrack" means "just landed and about to backtrack," then I'd say they have the right of way over traffic on final. If "about to backtrack" means "not yet on the runway, but about to taxi to the end of the runway," then I'd say traffic on final has right of way. In my experience, most fields requiring back-taxi ops don't have a reasonable place for landed traffic to pull over to allow landing traffic. See Elkin, NC (also some video on my site)for a good example of this.
Thanks for the thorough
Thanks for the thorough response John T !!
It seems "line up and wait
It seems "line up and wait behind" is one phrase in ICAO that equates to the US "taxi into position and hold" clearance. This type of clearance is no longer used in the US.
What country is this question originating from?

In my opinion some of the most awesome are the pilot jobs. I have always been fascinated by any kind of plane, and the fact that you get to fly so much makes me think this is my dream job. I am wondering what do you need to do in order to become a pilot, although i am sure it must be really hard to get your license.
